Ten Abodes 十住品 part3

  佛子!云何為菩薩發心住?此菩薩見佛世尊形貌端嚴,色相圓滿,人所樂見,難可值遇,有大威力;或見神足;或聞記別;或聽教誡;或見眾生受諸劇苦;或聞如來廣大佛法,發菩提心,求一切智。此菩薩緣十種難得法而發於心。何者為十?所謂:是處非處智、善惡業報智、諸根勝劣智、種種解差別智、種種界差別智、一切至處道智、諸禪解脫三昧智、、宿命無礙智、天眼無礙智、三世漏普盡智。是為十。佛子!此菩薩應勸學十法。何者為十?所謂:勤供養佛、樂住生死、主導世間令除惡業、以勝妙法常行教誨、歎無上法、學佛功徳、生諸佛前恆蒙攝受、方便演說寂靜三昧、讚歎遠離生死輪迴、為苦眾生作歸依處。何以故?欲令菩薩於佛法中心轉增廣;有所聞法,即自開解,不由他教故。
  “Disciples! What is meant by the bodhisattva’s abode of the first developing determination? This bodhisattva sees a Buddha, the World Honored One, whose figure or countenance is solemn and majestic; whose physical signs are perfect and delightful and is rare to encounter; who has great supreme might. Or this bodhisattva sees a Buddha’s miraculous deeds, or hears the hallmark from a Buddha, as the prediction of enlightenment, or listens to the preaches, or sees sentient beings undergoing intense suffering, or hears Tathagata’s vast and great Dharma and then arouses the Bodhi mind, seeking for all wisdom. This bodhisattva who produces the determination is conditioned by ten kinds of Dharmas that are difficult to obtain. What are those ten? They are:
the wisdom of knowing what is right or wrong in every condition(是處非處智); the wisdom of comprehending retributions of good and bad karmas(善惡業報智); the wisdom of realizing all kinds of roots, whether superior or inferior (諸根勝劣智); the wisdom of knowing the variety of understandings of sentient beings(種種解智); the wisdom of understanding the variety of realms of sentient beings(種種界智); the wisdom of knowing the variety of consequences or destinations all paths lead to(一切至處道智); the wisdom of knowing liberations of all stages of Dhyana(禪) and Samadhi(諸禪解脫三昧智); the wisdom of penetrating every being’s lives in three periods of time without obstruction,(宿命無礙智); the wisdom of divine vision without obstacles(知天眼無礙); and the wisdom of realizing one’s destruction of all kinds of illusion in three periods of time(三世普漏盡智). These are the ten.” “Disciples! This bodhisattva should be encouraged to learn ten kinds of Dharmas. What are those ten? They are: Diligently making offerings to Buddhas; happily abiding in both birth and death to help sentient beings due to great mercy; guiding the worlds to eradicate evil karmas; preaching and cultivating constantly with supremely precious Dharma; praising the unsurpassed Dharma; learning Buddhas’ merits and virtues; being born in the presence of all Buddhas where to be eternally accepted and received; preaching expediently in the peaceful state of Samadhi; praising the leaving far away from Birth-and-death reincarnation; and being the refuge of suffering sentient beings. What is the reason? To turn a bodhisattva’ mind into a broad one and spontaneously understand whatever preaching heard without depending on another’s instruction.”
